SURAT: Passers by never suspected Harsha Patel, 24, as she lurked around to prey a prospective victim. After all how many women specialise in
stealing motorcycles? At a time when very few women have taken to riding motorcycles, Harsha not only steals bikes, she prefers to ride away with them herself.
When cops caught her on Friday, Harsha was riding a Hero Honda Splendor she had stolen, while her accomplice and friend Sushant Gauda, 29, was riding pillion.
Dressed in jeans, a shirt and a jacket, Harsha always keeps her hair short and never rides pillion. Daughter of a poor farmer in Olpad, she ran away from home and took to stealing bikes because she was fascinated by them. This is the third time that Harsha has been arrested for vehicle theft. She was only recently released from jail.
While passing through Mansarovar Crossroads in Amroli Harsha was caught by a team of prevention of crime branch (PCB) officials. Constable Shantaram Patil got a tip-off about the girl following which a watch was arranged and Harsha was arrested.
The Splendor was stolen from the parking lot of Sadhna Hospital at Kim Crossroads on national highway eight four days ago. Harsha was arrested for stealing a bike in 2002 and again in early 2009 for the same offence.
"She is addicted stealing bikes. She loves riding them and finds stealing the easiest way to get a bike. She also developed contacts with other vehicle thieves in and around Surat who help her earn money from stealing bikes," says R V Rabari, police inspector, PCB. After riding a bike for few months she sells it in parts.
Cops add Harsha is an expert at unlocking bikes by using duplicate keys. "No one will doubt a girl if she is standing in a parking lot and keeping an eye on bikes," Rabari adds.
Harsha's parents refused to come to the police station when they were informed about her arrest. "She was married to a man in Olpad village but left him. Her family too has abandoned her," says Patil.
